S.L.A.L.'s objectives and policies in the animal husbandry sector
|
Dairy cattle industry and milk production
Provision of government services and the enactment of its policies for dairy cattle farmers is considered as one of the most important national branches of the animal husbandry sector to provide the nutritional requirements of the country.
Currently dairy cows number about 8.450.000 head, 10% of which are reared in large enclosed farms for the production of raw milk which is transported to collection centers to be supplied to dairy and other industrial food establishments. Capital investments in this sector are vital to the nation's requirements.
Comprehensive and intensive planning of animal husbandry, commenced in 1991 has resulted in reduction of about 4000 imported head of cattle from abroad. Between 1992 and 93 about 5000 head of dairy cows were bred and supplied to dairy farmers.
In this regard and taking into account the priority given to dairy cow breeding and the need to acquaint domestic farmers with related developments in other countries, Holstein cattle breeders shows were organized to be held annually in Iran. The main objectives in this organization of these shows were to introduce local dairy farmers to the latest dairy-cow management methods in the rearing, maintenance, feeding and breeding of cattle, and also to the latest research done in these areas.
Such attempts have proved highly fruitful; and today, as a result of the improvements in such areas, prospective demands for purebred dairy cows are being received from other countries.
| Cattle breeding Hereditary improvement of the local breeds of livestock at the cattle breeding centers and the use of the latest methods and know-how in the breeding of livestock has resulted in the production of purebred local livestock. The use of the most advanced techniques at our cattle breeding centers can meet the genetic requirements of the country as well as those of neighboring countries. |

The cattle breeding centers (state AI centers) can produce 2.000.000 doses of frozen sperms per year and also provide expert service for artificial insemination and embryo transfer to native cattle, playing, as a result an important role in the protection and genetic improvement of the country's livestock resources as well as the favorable reproduction of our native original breeds of livestock. |
